Two Rivers Man Drowns in River

Funeral services for Rudolph Hartlich, 56, of Two Rivers, who drowned early Saturday in the East Twin river, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church, the Rev. W.G. Haase officiating. Burial will be in Forest cemetery.

The body is at the Klein and Stangel funeral home, where it may be viewed tonight. It will be removed to the church Wednesday morning to lie in state until the services.

Mr. Hartlich was fishing from the Two Rivers city dock at the foot of 15th street, according to police, when he suddenly tumbled into the water. A boy fishing in the vicinity called for the coast guard across the river and a crew immediately responded with a surf boat. Dragging operations finally brought the body to the surface after three runs over the area. Coast guardsmen worked over the man for an hour, but were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead by Dr. Stephen Weld.

High School Janitor
Mr. Hartlich, a janitor at the Washington high school for the past 10 years, was born in Saxony, Germany in 1890 and served as city clerk in his home town for several years before coming to America in 1913. Upon arrival in this county he went to live with an uncle in North Dakota, later moving to Mellon and then to Ashland. In Ashland he married the former Clara Braunlich, also a native of Germany, on June 1, 1906, and the following January the couple moved to Wausau where Mr. Hartlich took employment in an ice cream plant.

In 1916 they came to Two Rivers where he became employed in the rolling mill of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing company, remaining at that work for about 12 years before joining the maintenance force at the high school.

Prominent Musician
While in Wausau, the deceased was a member of the 128th infantry of the Wisconsin National Guard and was a prominent musician in the company's band. In Two Rivers he was a member of both the male and mixed choruses at the St. John's Lutheran church, as well as the Freier Saengerbund at Manitowoc, always being highly interested in music.

Survivors are his wife, two sons, Carl of Two Rivers and Sgt. Norman, now with the army occupation forces in Japan; one daughter, Cpl. Johanna of the Woman's Army corps. stationed at Biggs Field, Texas; two brothers and one sister in Germany and one brother in Argentina.
