Mrs. Anna Powell, widow of the late General William H. Powell, Belleville, Ill. soldier and manufacturer, died at the home of Miss Phoebe Haak, 1419 Lebanon Avenue, her nurse.

Mrs. Powell was born in Belleville July 19, 1843, a daughter of the late Edward W. and Amanda West, nee Cameron/Cannon.

General Powell, her husband, was a native of South Wales, being born there in 1825. He was educated in the schools of Tennessee and after graduation became manager of a manufacturing company in Ironton, Ohio.

When the Civil War broke out, he was made a captain in the cavalry of West Virginia. He was advanced through the grades of Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel.

He was wounded while leading a charge, left on the field and captured. After an exchange of prisoners he was returned, leading a division in the Army of the Shenandoah. He was later promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

At the close of the war, he came to Belleville, Ill. where he headed a nail mill foundry. The Grand Army of the Republic for the Department of Illinois honored him in making him commander during 1895 and 1896.

Mrs. Powell was one of the older members of the Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Monticello Seminary and was an active member of the Women's Relief Corps until her health failed.

Mrs. Powell is survived by one brother and three sisters [note: some are step/half-siblings]:

Edward W. West, of Belleville, Ill.
Mrs. Myra M. Krafft, of Springfield, Mo.
Mrs. Clara Barnum, of Los Angeles, Cal.
Mrs. Hattie Hyde, of Belleville, Ill.

The funeral will be held from Gundlach & Co. chapel to Green Mount Cemetery. The Women's Relief Corps will have charge of the funeral. Rev. William C. Meeker, pastor of Presbyterian Church, will officiate at the services.
