Captain Asa Pitts Harris V was born in 1785, most surely where his mother, Lydia Ann Pitts Harris Britton was born--in Canaan, Columbia Co., New York. The family relocated to Harris Hill, Erie Co., New York in 1807 and established the Asa Harris Tavern and Inn. This was one of, if not the first, stage coach stops in the area. The Inn also served as temporary headquarters for the Buffalo newspaper during the burning of Buffalo during the War of 1812.

Captain Asa's father was Asa Harris IV of Lebanon, New London Co., Connecticut and he served as a Captain in the American Revolutionary War. He stayed in the milita rising to the rank of Lt. Col and is buried in the Harris Hill cemetery.

Captain Asa V fell sick on a business trip to Akron, Ohio in 1828, and after a number days, died in his hotel room. 1828 is when the very first railroad, the Baltimore-Ohio RR was under development and financing was being raised. Asa V, was likely to have been a representative on the B-O RR financial group from Erie Co., New York.
