George Clark served as a Private in Company F of the 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment during the Civil War from August 15, 1861, until his promotion to Sergeant-Major, Field & Staff, on January 1, 1863. He was then promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company G on March 18, 1864 and to 1st Lieutenant on July 30, 1864, before mustering out with the regiment on October 31, 1864, in Columbus, Ohio.
