Shout is recorded as a harness maker. He had served in the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery and was enrolled as a Civil War veteran residing at Garlington, Kansas, which is now a ghost town of Franklin County, Kansas. He is recorded in a number of records from the 1890s in the GAR post at Pomona and is recorded without his wife and family in the 1895 Pomona, Franklin, Kansas state census. ---------- John's brother, James A Shout, served in the 191st Pennsylvania Infantry and died at the U.
