LAST RITES ARE HELD MONDAY FOR DEL WATERBURY
Esteemed Business Man Was Resident Here Most Of His Life
There was a brief mention made in these columns last week of the death of a well known business man of this city, D. L. Waterbury, who passed away as the result of a heart attack on Thursday morning, January 13, 1949, while on a visit in the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. S. Bertrand, at Spink, S. D. About six years ago he became ill of heart trouble, but was able to carry on his business affairs; however, during the past year and a half he had been seriously handicapped by a sufferer from a nervous affliction known as shingles. Even at that, he carried on as best he could to within a short time before the final summons came. Had it been his lot to survive two more days, he would have attained the age of 71 years.
Delbert Leroy Waterbury, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Waterbury, was born in Elk Point, S. D., January 15, 1878. At an early age, he moved with his parents, members of pioneer families of this vicinity, to Akron, then called Portlandville, and this has been his home ever since. After completing his schooling, he joined with his father in an automobile agency, and also a trucking business prior to his entering the dairy field.
"Del" as he was familiarly known, was united in marriage with Miss Blanche Delier, of Akron, in 1902, and three children were born to this union.
In 1929 he married Mrs. Vivian Gillespie, of Rochester, Minnesota. Together, a year later, they started the Waterbury Dairy, which has grown from a small establishment to a successful business.
"Del." Waterbury will long be remembered by the people of Akron for his ever willingness to lend a helping hand and an understanding heart to those who were in need. His industriousness, honesty, integrity and genuine love for his fellow-men were outstanding qualities that brought to his the esteem of a legion of friends.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Vivian Waterbury; his three children, Sylvan Waterbury, of Sioux City; also by three step-sons, Russell Gillespie, of Denver, Colo.; Lt. Harold S. Gillespie, of Camp Lee, Viginia, and Earl Gillespie, of Akron; two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Bertrand, of Spink, S. D., and Mrs. Mayme Edgar, of Sioux City, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Orville L. Nelson, the pastor. A male quartet, comprised of H. J. Behmier, Karl Silkebakken, Harry Neson, and J. R. Shoulberg, sang, with accompaniement by Mrs. Harry Nelson. The pallbearers were George Shindler, Art Huebner, Fred Dirks, Walter Larsen, Grant Gassman and Leo Tangeman. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
