Jimmy Myrle Oliver, 74, of New Boston, Texas, and a former long-term resident of Hooks, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015, in a local hospital, after a brief illness and surrounded by his loving family. Jimmy was born on September 28, 1940, in Simms, Texas, to Mary Lou (Daniel) and Roy Clayton Oliver. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Boston, where he sang in the choir and attended several Bible study classes. Jimmy worked in the Primary Department on Sunday Mornings and attended Antioch Sunday School Class.

Jimmy was a 1959 graduate of James Bowie High School and was a member of the James Bowie Alumni Association. He graduated from East Texas State University with a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Special Education. He was a retired teacher and bus driver from the Hooks Independent School District and a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association. He also worked at Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant. Jimmy served the Hooks youth athletic program for 33 years, having served as beloved coach of the Hooks Night Hawks Little League team for almost 20 years. He also was a longtime announcer for the Hooks Hornets football team. Jimmy was a 1st Lt. in the Texas Army National Guard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his maternal grandparents, with whom he made his home, Allie Virginia and George Daniel. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie Lynn Oliver.

Praising the Lord for his life are his wife, Rosalie Russell Oliver of New Boston, Texas; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jim Oliver of Richmond, Kentucky and Jay and Sonja Oliver of Texarkana, Texas; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Chris and Vickie McIntyre; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Anne and Scott Parrott; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Tyler and Samantha Oliver of Greenville, Texas, Paige Oliver of College Station, Texas, Amy Oliver of Texarkana, Texas, Kristin and Douglas Scudder of Shelbyville, Indiana, Jesse Parrott of Indianapolis, Indiana, Sarah Parrott of Indianapolis, Indiana and Melissa and Kyle Tullos of Texarkana, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Leon Starrett of Hooks, Texas; a niece, Shanin Starrett of Longview, Texas; a nephew, Patrick Starrett of Fort Worth, Texas; a cousin and his wife, Billy Mack and Linda Daniel; and numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Jimmy was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, uncle, coach and loyal friend. His family was treasured, and he always expressed his pleasure in their accomplishments. A life of service, concern for others and commitment to God will be his legacy. He wanted his family to come to know the Lord, and he and Rosalie prayed for their family and many relatives and friends by name every day.

Jimmy was a wonderful person who will be missed and held close to his family’s heart.

With grateful hearts, the family would like to thank the nursing staff and doctors at the CICU unit at St. Michael’s Hospital.

Services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, July 26, 2015, at First Baptist Church in New Boston, Texas with Rev. Roy Ford and Rick Rothwell officiating. Interment will follow at Read Hill Cemetery in New Boston, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Bates Family Funeral Home in De Kalb, Texas.
