David Brinkley died at the age of 42, in the line of duty. He was a lifetime member of the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department in Stevensville, Maryland, as a Volunteer Firefighter, where he had served 25 years. He was also a former Fire Chief. Over the years he also served as Pump Operator, Captain, and President. After responding to a Vehicle Fire, he returned to the Fire Station, refilling SCBA Cylinders. He suffered a Fatal Heart Attack. He had been employed by the Maryland State Highway Administration for 20 years.

He was survived by: His wife Barbara Brinkley, his father William Brinkley, Three Brothers-Dennis Brinkley, Wayne Brinkley, and Jamnes Dorner, and Two Sisters-Sharon Brinkley and Rosa Politowicz.
