MRS. HANNAH HOOKER-NORTON Aged 84 years old
Connecticut BRITISH COLONY

CHILD of
Dr. Daniel Hooker and
Mrs. Sarah Standley-Hooker

GRANDCHILD of
Rev Thomas Hooker and
Mrs. Hooker

Hannah Hooker Norton's grandfather was the illustrious Thomas Hooker, who was instrumental in founding Connecticut's government, which differed significantly from the style of the Boston area church-dominated governments. Rev. Hooker seemed to have a clearer sense of "democracy." Freedom of thought was more important to these Connecticut settlers than living by the letter of the church (Pilgrims left England due this oppression). Hannah's male line goes back to Thomas then Daniel, 3, Samuel 2, Thomas, 1. She was the daughter of Dr. Daniel and Sarah (Standley) Hooker of Wethersfield, Connecticut. Her birthday is not noted, her marriage to Rueben Norton, was 7 Sep 1738, and her death at Guildford, CT., was on the 9 of May 1797. Eleven Children are issued to this couple. The Hotchkiss ancestor is Arah Norton, 1739-1813
and in Genealogy excerpt from Ancestry's series North American Family Histories, "The Descendants of Thomas Hooker, Hartford, Connecticut." There is in the Introduction a detailed history of the remarkable Rev. Thomas Hooker, who was instrumental in designing a Constitution perfect for what he and those settlers who came to Connecticut and many were from the Boston area included a combination of intense piety with freedom of thought.
