Benjamin was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island to Albert and Lydia (Cornell) Manchester both natives of "Little Rhody". He resided in the state of his birth until he was eighteen years old, then accompanied his parents to California, where he resided until 1881, engaged in farming. In the year mentioned, however, he removed to a point in the vicinity of Endicott in the county of Whitman in Washington State, and from that date until 1888 he followed farming and cattle-raising there. He then bought a place seven miles southwest of Colfax. He owned one thousand and forty acres of land upon which he raised wheat, stock and other farm products: but as though this generous tract was too small for his unbounded energy and ambition, he operated a threshing machine and outfit during the harvest seasons. He operated the first steam thresher in Whitman County. On his farm he had an orchard of about twelve acres.

His mother died at Endicott December 6, 1897; his father died there in 1905. There were eight children in the parental household: Edward W in Rhode Island; Anthony A. in Whitman County; Otis E. in Pierce County; Benjamin T; Asa C. in Endicott; Betsy J. in Endicott; and Lydia G who died in California.

Ben married Nora Anna Privette in May 1908. He married Mary Littleton in December 1922.
