Valley Courier Wed. July 15 2015
Don (Elias Adonais) Pena passed away at his sister’s home in Capulin, CO on Wednesday, July 15, 2015.
He was born in Capulin, Colorado in May 1938 to Federico and Manuelita Peña.
His early childhood was spent in the Sargent community where he graduated from Sargent High School in 1956.
He moved to San Diego after graduation and joined the US Air Force in July of 1960. He travelled all over the world. A memorable family trip was the drive from Panama to Arizona with his wife Sharon and two children in a VW pop-up van. His 28 years of service were marked with many commendations and he was honorably discharged in 1988 at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at age 39 and fought a tough battle until the end never letting the disease hold him back. His determination and stubbornness helped him live a full life including many outdoor adventures and parties with his family.
His favorite pastimes were travelling, fishing, hunting, lapidary, rock and shell collecting and he was definitely an avid sports fan. He spent his retirement years in Phoenix, AZ, Monte Vista, CO, and Alpena, MI. Upon death of his wife Lori in Michigan, he returned to his beloved San Luis Valley.
Don is survived by his children: Jeff (Rachel) Illinois; Lisa and Holly Arizona, nine grandchildren, sisters Nina and Ruth San Diego, CA, Valentina Monte Vista, CO, Maryann (Ed) Capulin, CO, Veronica Tempe, AZ, Vivian (Manuel) Kersey, CO, two brothers Richard (Susan) Romeo, CO, and Andrew from Vail, CO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Evelyn and Mary Louise. Never giving up on marriage, he was preceded in death by his second wife Thelma and his third wife Lori. Also surviving are his Donajkowski step-children: Aaron (Barbara), Glen (Tamara), Mitch, and Lenore (Carl Kasubowski).
Graveside services will be held at the Colorado State Veterans Cemetery at Homelake on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 2:00 PM with full military honors. Viewing and visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-5 pm at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Alamosa who is in care of the arrangements.
