John Hamilton came to the United States at age 18, accompanied by his younger brother, George, who was a prominent business man in New York. Another brother, Robert, came later and is in mercantile business in Canto, Mass. He came to Racine, where he started a sash and blind factory. In 1845 his works were burned and he lost everything. In 1852 he joined the J. I. Case & Co's works as a contractor to built separators and continued to work there for 28 years. When he came to Racine John purchased land and built his homestead at what is now 1609 Washington Ave. He platted Hamilton's Addition and Hamilton Avenue was named in honor of him. He married on Christmas Day in 1846. John Hamilton joined First Presbyterian Church on March 2, 1845. He was elected as an Elder January 1, 1850 and was in that office for 38 years. He was beloved by the church and he is remember in a stained glass window at the church.
