John Anderson's life spanned almost the entire 19th century. He was widowed and remarried when he left Sweden for America in 1854, and widowed twice by the time he settled on the Minnesota River with his daughter Mary and her husband Ole Hanson-Fagerland. One of the first settlers of the region, he was known locally as "The Old Swede". By the 1890s, he was apparently living with a senior caretaker.

John's obituary confirms that he was buried in "the cemetery at Trinity church at Myers" which is an antiquated name for the region including Wegdahl. Though several graves stand, John was buried with no permanent marker. There is another Anderson family in the cemetery, including another Johannes Anderson, but they have a Norwegian inscription on their gravestone.
