Mary Elizabeth Huston, 93, died August 8, 2007 after a long period of illness in the nursing home of Luthercare, Lititz, Pa. She was born January 31, 1914 at R.D., Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of the late David and Emma (Livingston) Yoder. Mrs. Huston is survived by her husband, Reverend Ernest W. Huston, who celebrated 70 years of marriage on June 1.

Mrs. Huston graduated from Ferndale High School and the Hammond Beautician School of Johnstown, Pa.

On June 1, 1937, she was married to the Rev. Ernest W. Huston, who served as a clergyman in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for 63 years, beside whom she staunchly stood as a faithful helpmate. She was largely responsible for the organization of the Women's Missionary Society of the Christ Lutheran Church in Oreland, PA, and served as its president during the early part of her husband's pastorate there. She was active in the Women's Missionary Society of the Philadelphia District of the Central Pennsylvania Synod and served as its corresponding Secretary. For 5 years she served as the organization's Department of Life Membership and in Memoriam Secretary during which time the Philadelphia District moved ahead of the other 3 districts in the East Pennsylvania Conference in the Life Membership Department. She was presented with a Life Membership as a parting gift from the Women's Missionary Society of her own church in Oreland, Pa.

While in Roaring Spring, Pa, she served as president of the Roaring Spring Council of Church Women United. In 1955 she moved with her husband to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Neffsville, Pa where she was instrumental in the organization of the United Church Women in the parish and was elected as its president; she was also president of the newly organized Neffsville section of the Lancaster Branch of the Needle Work Guild of America, Inc.

Much of Mrs. Huston's time was given to volunteer work. For years she spent time telephoning for the Chaplain's Office at the Lancaster General Hospital. She was a driver for Lancaster Meals on Wheels almost from its beginning. She worked with the Lancaster Unit of Multiple Sclerosis for a period of time. She converted well over 500 men's shirts into hospital bed jackets for the Luther Acres Nursing Home, Lititz, Pa. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in East Petersburg, Pa.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Huston is survived by 2 daughters: Janet Kathryn, wife of Charles R. Lorenz of Ladylake, Florida and Ruth Elizabeth, wife of Kim Frick of West Chester, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church, Broad and Lemon Streets, East Petersburg, Pa with Rev. John Smaligo and Rev. Mary-Margaret Ruth officiating. Friends will be received during the hour preceding the service.
