Mrs. Mozelle Costner Parker, age 92 of Gibson passed away on Monday, June 18, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the St. John United Methodist Church with burial following in Pinecrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday at the Church. Rev. Myron Dice will be officiating the services.

Mozelle was born in Cleveland County, North Carolina on July 27, 1919. She was daughter of the late Rev. Joseph Wheeler Costner, Sr., and Cora Lee Canley Costner and the beloved wife to the late Wright Fletcher “W.F.” Parker. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Wheeler Costner, Jr.

Mrs. Parker is survived by one sister, Pauline “Polly” Costner of Gibson and a brother, Sherrill Costner of Glen Alpine, NC; five nephews, two nieces and a host of family and friends.

She received her education at Piedmont High School, Gardner-Webb University, Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She had a distinguished career in education as being a dedicated teacher that taught in Rutherford College, Burke County, Gaston County and Scotland County School Systems retiring after 37 years of service.

She was active in many county and state organizations serving on the United Way Board, Hospice of Scotland County Board, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Omicron Sorority, Scotland County Health Board and the Scotch Gardeners Garden Club. She was also a member of the North Carolina Extension and Community Association for over 50 years serving as State President in 1986 at which time she led the NC Delegates to the Associated Country Women of the World meeting in Ireland. More recently, she served on the Scotland Health Care Foundation Board representing the Edwin Morgan Center.

Mrs. Parker and her husband served on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Foundation Board at NC State University for many years. They established Endowed Scholarships at NC State University and Gardner-Webb University.

She was an active leader in the St. John United Methodist Church where she taught youth and adult Sunday School Classes, sang in the Church Choir and played the organ and piano on occasions. She also served as President of United Methodist Women, Secretary to Administrative Council, the Parsonage Committee and chaired the Annual Harvest Day for over 25 years.
