Carl arrived in Alamogordo in 1969 as a member of the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing. During his Air Force career, he flew as a radar intercept officer in F-89s, F-101s, B-57s, F-4s and several other aircraft types, and was stationed in 11 different bases in the U.S. and Alaska, Germany, the Philippine Islands, Vietnam and Thailand. While flying over 300 combat sorties in Southeast Asia, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 15 oak leaf clusters. His other awards include the Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Air Service Medal (honor class) from the Republic of Vietnam.
