The son of Henry & Barbara Snoke and twin brother of Leah, he married Barbara Lower and fathered Hiram (b. 09/27/51) and Barbara Ellen (b. 04/09/61 - married a Rubendell). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Millersburg, Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Dauphin County and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg January 24, 1862, as a private with Co. D, 107th Pennsylvania Infantry, and discharged by surgeon's certificate initially on November 12, 1862. The War Department, for reasons not clearly stated in his compiled military service records, later altered his discharge date to June 3, 1862.
