Dr. Rinsley was known for his expertise in the theory and practice of psychiatry. He wrote or co-authored six books and over 100 articles. He also achieved prominence for his development of object relations theory, and he was considered the world’s foremost authority on Ronald Fairbairn, a member of the British psychoanalytic movement following World War II.

Following a month-long illness, surgery, and post-surgical complications, Donald Rinsley died at a Houston, Texas, hospital on 23 December 1989 at the age of 61. He was buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka.
