Catherine Steele MacLean (Currie) Catherine Steele MacLean (Currie), 99, passed away peacefully in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, on May 18, 2007. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007 at 11 a.m. in Sedgwick Memorial Presbyterian Church, Tatamagouche. Rev. Morley Bentley officiating. Born in Murdoch's Bridge, Waugh River, Tatamagouche, she was a daughter of the late Abram and Margaret (Lindsay) Currie. Catherine was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Catherine trained as a nurse at the New Hampshire State Hospital - Yale School of Nursing in New Haven, Conn., USA, in 1929. Her first employment was in the USA, later returning to Nova Scotia to work in various hospitals. She retired from the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche. In later years, Catherine would often recall her experiences while working with Dr. Dan Murray, crossing the frozen Tatamagouche Bay by horse and sleigh to look after patients in Malagash, travelling over snow-covered roads to assist new mothers, and very often having to care for the whole family as well. Catherine was an avid historian and extremely proud of her Scottish heritage, education her family about their ancestral roots and community history. She was a direct descendant of Wellwood Waugh, one of the original settlers in the Tatamagouche area. Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Frank MacLean, brothers, Lawrence Currie, Frank Currie, Haskett Currie; sisters, Marjorie Banks, Elizabeth MacRobbie, Gladys Fletcher, Margaret MacDonald, and son-in-law, Cyril Collicott. She is survived by her children Betty (George) Woods, Rossford, Ohio, US; Frank (Patricia) MacLean, Aurora, ON.; Heather Collicott, Truro; grandchildren, Lindsay (John) Newcomer, Ian Woods, Patricia MacLean, Craig MacLean, Cathy (Rick) Hemmingway, Valerie Wilson; great-grandchildren, David Newcomer, Zachary Wilson, and many nieces and nephews. The family wish to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Cedarstone, Eden Hall, for all the wonderful care given to Mom over the many years she was there, and to the exceptional, kind and wonderful people at Cedarstone who helped and supported us through the years as well. Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter's Funeral Home in Tatamagouche. Interment in Lockerby Cemetery.
