Mr. August Holmgren, an old and respected settler, died at his home in Mamre township, Monday, February 19. He had been ill but two weeks, having suffered a stroke of paralysis on February 6th.
Deceased was born at Halga, Ekeshärad parish, Vämland, Sweden, on December 4, 1855. He came to Kandiyohi county in May 1880 with his parents, August and Maria Holmgren. They located in Mamre township and here the deceased has resided since that time.
He was married in 1880 to Johanna Olson, who died three years ago. Three children are left to mourn their father, viz: Mrs. E. G. Erickson of Irving, Richard on the old home farm, and Edla, a nurse at the Willmar hospital in this city. He is also mourned by four brothers and one sister, Carl and Gustaf of Malta, Montana; John of Estevan, Canada; Otto and Regina at home; seven grandchildren and a large number of friends. He had villed various relations of life as son, husband, father, brother, friend and filled them well. He held the office of supervisor and town treasurer for Mamre township.
The funeral was held last Friday from the East Salem church, Rev. Oscar Wenstrand officiating. Selections were rendered by the choir and Mrs. Wenstrand. Floral offerings, including a token from the East Salem Ladies’ Aid, were many and beautiful. The remains were laid at rest in the church cemetery. The bearers were H. P. Lofgren, Alex Johanson, O. O. Bergstrom, N. G. Holmgren, Joseph Holmgren and Nels Stjernlof.
Mr. Holmgren was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. He had borne adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. Peace be to his memory.
