Born in Evansville, Indiana, Mrs. Shoemaker lived in many places during her husband’s Naval career, including two years in Sasebo, Japan. Beginning in the mid-1970’s, for 13 years, Doris and her husband travelled the U.S as full-time RV-ers, spending most summers in Virginia with their grandchildren and winters with her husband’s family in Southern California, and “snow-birding” in south Texas on their return trip to Virginia. Doris loved her two grandchildren. She and her husband kept them often and took them on many, many vacations.
In 1989, they settled in Culpeper to be permanently near to their grandchildren. Shortly thereafter, Doris became involved in community service activities through the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP). As a volunteer, Doris worked for several years with Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Food Service Program and volunteered for 15 years with the Culpeper-Madison Chapter of the American Red Cross, during which time she donated extra hours every year to their Summer Water Safety Program. She was an active member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church, AARP, and enjoyed participating in activities with fellow seniors in the Culpeper Silver Club.
Starting in the early 1990’s, she and her husband traveled extensively, visiting all of the countries in Western Europe, many in Eastern Europe, Russia, India, China, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Argentina, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. Together, they traveled on the great trains of Europe including the Orient Express. They cruised the Mediterranean from Istanbul to Rome via the Greek Islands; and they also cruised to and around Alaska. Doris especially enjoyed river cruising – on the Mississippi, Ohio, and Columbia Rivers in the United States; the Rhine, Main, Danube, Elbe Rivers of Europe; the Neva, Kovzha, and Volga Rivers in Russia; the Ganges River in India; the Nile River in Egypt; the Amazon and Negro Rivers in Brazil; and on the Yangtze in China, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Doris loved to travel, would be ready to go at the drop of a hat, and would know everyone in their travel group by the end of the trip.
