Reuben Wellman II was born 13 Apr 1770 in Mansfield, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

He was the Son of Reuben Wellman I and Mary Grover.

His Family is next found in Jamaica, Windham, Vermont in an early Vermont Census taken in 1787 (pre-Statehood). Where his Father and mother are said to have died are are Buried.

Reuben our Subject then finds his way to Neighboring Guilford, Windham, Vermont in 1793 where he Marries a "Mary" Bixby. This is according to Descendants of Thomas Wellman of Lynn, Massachusetts pg. 246.

However, there are no Bixby's in that town by the name of Mary. There's a Molly recorded. But no Mary. The Book says that Mary died 27 Apr 1809 in Jamaica, Windham, Vermont.

I'm not quite believing that yet because of what the book then says about their Children. Just look at Martha below, she's born 7 years after her mother Mary dies??

(so when you run into something like that; all facts become suspect, as this part of the book was not properly edited and reviewed, by any standard)

Anyway in the Descendants of Thomas Wellman of Lynn, Massachusetts pg. 247.

They list this couple as having 11 Childern.

1. Amasa b. 14 Sep 1793 in

2. Annis b. 2 Feb 1795 in Jamaica, Windham, Vermont

3. Polly b. 14 Sep 1796 in Jamaica, Windham, Vermont

4. Cyrenus Perhaphs not in order settled in Kendall, NY

5. Manassah B. b. Probably not in order; settled in Freedom, Michigan 1833 (more on him later)

6. Martha E b. 1816 d. in Washtenaw, Michigan 9 Dec 1885.

Then the book goes on to say; other children unknown.

So in a lot of those cases where Birth records are not available to an author, census materials are invaluable.

Using them I have found some missing Children;

7. Phila b. Jul 14, 1798 in Georgia, Franklin, Vermont

Now let me stop here for a moment.

Reuben was Living in Georgia, Franklin, Vermont when Phila was Born. None of the above 6 fist siblings are recorded either in Jamaica or Georgia Vermont. Nor any of these that follow;

8. Reuban III b. 1801 in Georgia, Franklin, Vermont

9. Adam b. Aug 1809 in Georgia, Franklin, Vermont

They appear in Censuses and in books to name a few;

Check out these books;

Landmarks of Orleans County pg. 670 this guy was one of the first people to settle in Kendall, Orleans, New York back in 1817.

History of Washtenaw County, Michigan: Together with Sketches of ..., Volume 2, page 1291. he again was a Pioneer first settler to Michigan in 1833, along with son's. One who is specifically mentioned is Manassah B. Wellman.

I said I'd come back to Manassah B. for a reason. Why in every book, on every census, or mention of this guy have his middle name?

What could that "B" actually stand for, well you get a hint on his 1870 Census in Freedom, Washtenaw, Michigan, USA when the census worker writes down; "M bigeby Wellman"

If you have read this far take a break.

OK; Say bigeby, five time fast out loud.

Yeah, that's Right it Bixby....Mary or Molly Bixby that is recorded in the town where Reuben Married, was Mary Bixby. So his name was Manassah Bixby Wellman.

Named after his Grandfather Manassah Bixby. Who BTW I saw a Bio on ancestry.com that says he served one month during the Revolutionary War, "Manassah had one month service in the Revolutionary War in Captain David Stowell's Company in Colonel William William's Regiment."

That's the problem with cut an paste, what month, and where?

Answer; Battles of Saratoga, September 19 and October 7, 1777

Yup, turning point in the Revolution and he showed up.

There's a few errors in the book;

One I would point out is all the Children were probably born in Georgia, Franklin, Vermont where the family lived.

Two I'm entirely convinced that Mary was Molly. ie why in the heck would you name your kid, Manassah bigeby Wellman?

The answer to that is you wouldn't.

You'd call him Manassah Bixby Wellman, after your dad, your brother your uncle. But there weren't no brother's or Uncle's named Manassah Bixby, not in that town at that time. So either Manassah Bixby was her Daddy or they just thunked it up?

Three, I'm not so sure when Mother Mary/Molly died, or Where. But it's probably Georga, Franklin Vermont, or Kendall Orleans, New York. If she is the mother of Martha Eliza above then she died after 1816. And the date they give as 1809 could be another typo, and possibly 1819 vs. 09.

One thing is for sure, she did die, and Reuben re-married in New York sometime after 1817 a Polly? This Polly was born in New York and is buried right beside him.

So there are still a few questions need answered, along with 2 missing children...but I'm not sure on that either.

I suggest you tie the children to Mary "Molly" Bixby until her gave is found to keep the family together.

The book says nothing about her Mary's parents, but then everybody agreed with everybody else that this guy died 27 Apr 1809 in Jamaica, Windham, Vermont, USA. At least on ancestry, where did that come from?

A Green leaf?

Cut'n'paste can kill ya.
