John Trice Gates was the son of John Norwood Gates and Martha Holman Trice. He was born about 1830 in TN. He was married first to Mary Elizabeth Lamb about Sep 1854. They had the following children: Savannah Cobb Gates, Erastus F Gates, Barzella Gates, Palo Alto Gates, Stanton Battle Gates, Parmelia Langford Gates and Erby Sperry Gates. He was married second to Elizabeth Hale about 1862. They had the following child: Izel 'Zee' Gates. He was married a third time to Simona 'Simmie' Alice Marler. They had the following children: Maude Gates, Lillian Gates, Florence Gates, Johnnie Marler Gates, Martha Jane Gates, Bernice Christine Gates and Alyce "Alley" Gates. Some claim he was shot while out checking his property but as yet I find no information on his death or burial. In the Lamb and Allied Families of Sequatchie Valley book by James Mohon, pub 1996, John Trice was found in the livestock pen where he had a bull.
