In 1885 he began working at the Planters National Bank as a discount clerk.
He became cashier in 1892, vice-president in 1911, and president in 1915.
In 1920, he was elected chairman of the board, and when Planters consolidated with the State and City Bank in 1926 to become State-Planters Bank and Trust Company, Smith was elected chairman of the executive committee.
Smith was active in charities, including the Richmond Family Service Society of which he served as president. Married Mary Douthat Barton (1860-1929) 18 October 1882, and they had four children,one daughter was Ellen Harvie Smith.
