Known as 'Muddy' by the neighborhood kids. She was born in Slate Creek, Montgomery county, Kentucky and before she was 10 the family moved to Missouri. She was the last child born to Rolly and Alia Anne (Anderson) COFFEE. She married John R. EDMON in 1874. They had seven children. They were living in Cass county in June 1880, when the census was done. In September, a son was born. By 1883, they were in Versailles, Morgan County, Missouri, where another son was born. In 1884, the two older children died. Before March 1886, they moved to Texarkana where two more daughters and another son were born.
In 1893, Martha was left a widow and in 1901, she and her 14-year-old daughter, Gracie, were living in a boarding house in Texarkana, Arkansas. In 1910 & 1920, she was in Texarkana, Texas in her own home with two sons and took in boarders. By 1930, she was in residence with Gracie, who was now a widow with small children. She died there in 1932 and buried next to her husband in Woodlawn Cemetery.
NOTES: The surviving son, R. W. EDMON, was actually W. R. (William Robert).
Her obit states the services would be on a Sunday at 4 pm in the residence and burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. The cemetery was about three city blocks from the house and they probably walked the distance. The casket may have been carried by the pallbearers or on a cart (drawn by man or horse). In my mind's eye, I can picture the dirt road they walked. She died just 3½ months before I was born.
The 11 grandchildren were: John Franklin, Pearl Victoria & Ida Lee Edmon (children of Wm Robert); James Vestal & Martha Lucina Hunter (children of James Richard); Marie Poulos-Davis, Frank Allen, James Ellis, George Reamer & Gracie May Westmoreland (children of Gracie Lee); Terry Elmore Edmon (son of John A. M.).
The 3 great-grandchildren were: James Nicholas Poulos, son of Marie; Edith Elaine & Murryne Gertrude YOUNG, daughters of Frank Allen. Three more would be added that year: Mary Louise (daughter of Frank), myself (daughter of James Ellis) and Martha Jeanette (daughter of Gracie May).
