Donald Edward Spence, 74, of Woodstock, Virginia, passed away on July 20, 2015 after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on May 26, 1941, a son of the late Peggy Spence Aleshire and Samuel Ray Spence.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Loretta S. Davis and stepson, Jackie Frazier.

Mr. Spence was a graduate of Woodstock High School, Class of 1959.

He enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam War. After Vietnam he worked for the government for 12 years. Since then, he worked for Zachry Construction and Herbert International on overseas and domestic contracts.

He loved fishing, hiking and reading.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Dixie G. Spence; his two sons, David G. Spence of CA and Darren F. Spence of NJ; a stepdaughter, Annette Miller of Mt. Jackson; a stepson, Donald P. Frazier, Jr. of Woodstock; eight grand- children; his brother, Jerry C. Spence of MD; and two stepsisters, Candace Hosaflook and Peggy S. Stickley, both of Woodstock.

Mr. Spence was cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of Valley Funeral Service.
