He was the son of the late John and Ann Brooks Carpenter.
He was a retired contractor and home builder and attended the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Mustin Carpenter in 1980.
Surviving are one son, Virgil Carpenter, Rogersville; six daughters, Mrs. Howard (Hilda) Klepper, Mrs. Larry (Patsy) Boyd, Mrs. Jack (Claudine) Davis, Mrs. Onzie (Burnice)
Williams all of Rogersville, Mrs. Mona Phillips, Knoxville, Mrs. Scotty Brooks, Houston, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Troy (Anna Lou) Price, Rogersville; two brothers, Wilson Carpenter, Morristown, and Luther Carpenter, Blountville; 15 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday afternoon from Colboch-Price Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Aubrey Floyd and David L. Hale officiating.
Burial was followed in Family Mustin Carpenter Cemetery.
