Collis was the son of Frank Montgomery and Virgie Cartwright Montgomery.

Collis united with Mary Helen James on 22 Jan 1965 and with this union are two known children: James Collis Montgomery and Collis Montgomery Jr.

Collis has another three known children: Adienne Montgomery, Kristy Montgomery Chandler and Thomas Montgomery.

Collis later united with Wilma Barber on 16 Jul 1974.

He shared his childhood with Estella Montgomery Scott, Elton Montgomery, Fannie Jean Montgomery Hoyt, Thelma Montgomery McCoy, Connell Montgomery, Lillian Mary Montgomery Fisher, Madeline Montgomery Ellis.
