John Stephen Meador Jr., 93, of Rustburg, VA, died Monday, July 20, 2015. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth May Dawson Meador.

Born Wednesday, July 12, 1922 in Bedford; JS was a son of the late John Stephen Meador, Sr. and the late Margaret Arrington Meador.

In addition to his wife and parents, JS was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Yvonne Meador; three brothers, Steve, Sam, and Robert Meador; and two sisters, Catherine and Ruby.

JS is survived by a sister-in-law, Esther Tomlin and husband, Howard of N.C.; five nieces, Theresa Penland, Wanda Hobson, Kathy Harrison, Tammy Still, and Terry Wellman; two nephews, Andy Clowdis and Tommy Tomlin; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews. Also, surviving are “his boys”, Benny, Jimmie, and Danny Cunningham. He leaves behind a multitude of friends who were as devoted to him as he was to them.

He will be forever remembered for his humor and pranks. He loved to tell “his stories”, which he told with great detail and clarity to all who would listen. He faithfully spent many hours each day calling friends all across the U.S.

JS proudly served our country as a Merchant Marine during World War II. He and May ran Mammy’s Kitchen and was later proprietor and owner of Cindy’s Truck Stop and then Lynchburg Auto Auction on Highway 29 in Rustburg.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. A celebration of John’s life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Hyland Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Weiser officiating.
