BAYOU VISTA - Gordon E. Bale, 79, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2001, at his home in Bayou Vista. His wife of 56 years, Ruth, was at his side.

He was born May 30,1922, in Lodge Pole, Nebraska to Mary and Alvin Bale. He graduated from Lodge Pole High School
where he ran track. He entered the Army Air Force in 1943, and served as a Ball Turrett Gunner on a B17 in the "Hell's Angels", the 303rd Bomb Group. He was stationed in England and flew in 31 combat missions in Western Europe, including the invasion of Normandy. Among other medals, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.

In 1944, he met Ruth Bartram at a USO dance and 9 months later, they were married. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1950, with majors in Math and Physics. He started working for Halliburton Services Company as a petroleum engineer in Oklahoma where his four children were born. In 1961, his work took him and the family overseas for 9 years. They lived in Borneo, followed by Libya, England and Iran. During this time, he became the manager for the North Sea Area and, later, for the Middle East Operation, and traveled all over the world with the family.

He was an avid photographer and a coin collector. He completed his career with Halliburton in Oklahoma in 1975. After several years of retirement, the Bales returned to work for ARAMCO in Saudia Arabia for 5 years and traveled some more. In 1984, the Bales retired for the second time to live in Bayou Vista near his brother W. J. and sister-in-law Hazel Bale. Gordon enjoyed fishing, cooking and gardening. His garden was always in bloom and he was known for growing beautiful plumeria.
He loved to cook for the community and his family. His Christmas kolatches were a family tradition.
