Born in Salem, VT. Son of Ambrose Renell (1801-1874) and Emily Crandall (1809-1890).
In 1869 he married Mary Ann Maxwell (1842-1875). Their children were Joseph(1871-1915), Martin Van Buren, Jr.(1872-1921), and William T(1874-1876).
In 1889 he married Eleanor Jane Charke (1867-1937). Their children were John W(1889-1890), George Armstrong Custer(1891-1968), Edna Thurston(1893-1973), Albert Edward(1899-1900), and Clarence Pinder(1902-1959).
He served in the US Civil War, Vermont 1st Cavalry, Co. D.

Martin V. Renell died at his home early Sunday morning at the age of 61 years. He had been janitor of the opera house block for some time and performed his accustomed duties up to Tuesday. That night he showed evident symptoms of derangement, was conveyed home and a doctor summoned, who reported him suffering from typhoid fever, death resulting as above stated. Martin served through the war, a member of 1st Vermont cavalry, Co. D., and was made prisoner by Moseby, he of guerrilla fame, surrendering only when his horse was shot from under him and, as he used to relate it, when he had no other alternative. He was past commander of Erastus Buck Post, G. A. R. He is survived by a wife and three children, also two sons by his first wife. Funeral services were held at Christ Church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. P. Lee, comrades of the Post acting as bearers.
