An obituary was published for Nettie in the Ottumwa Daily Courier on November 28, 1953. She was survived by her adopted daughter Mrs. Ruby Fletcher of near Ottumwa, a brother Merritt Sponsler of Ottumwa, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.
There is also an inscription in the middle of Nettie and Dewitt's stone which reads:
