Cuban Statesman. He served as President of Cuba from August 12, 1933 to his resignation on September 6, 1933. He was the son of famed Cuban revolutionary hero Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, he was educated in the United States and France before returning to Cuba in 1895. He later went into Cuban politics, serving first in the Cuban legislature and then joining the diplomatic service. In 1922 Cespedes returned to Cuba to serve as Foreign Minister under President Gerardo Machado, but he served only a year. Afterwards he was active in trying to overthrow President Machado. When President Machado left Cuba in August 1933, Cespedes was offered the presidency. He would serve for one month until the Sergeants' Revolution took place on September 6, 1933. Cespedes was forced to resign and then returned to the foreign service, becoming Ambassador to Spain. He returned to Cuba in 1935 and authored several books.
