Mr. Curtis Dewitt Wood, Sr., 79, died early Monday morning (July 20, 2015) at his residence after an extended illness.

He was a native of Turner County, but he has lived in Waycross since 1973. On August 1, 1983, he retired from the United States Navy as Chief Hospital Corpsman. Mr. Wood's distinguished career began June 1954. After recruit training, his first assignment was Hospital Corps School at San Diego, CA. Subsequent assignments include, among other ships, the USS Albany (CG10), USS Cromwell (DE1014), USS Ranger (CVA61), USS Repose (AH16) and various duties ashore, both within the continental United States and overseas. His assignments and advancements have ranged the spectrum of leadership from Hospital Recruit to Chief Hospital Corpsman. For his outstanding service, Mr. Wood received the National Defense Service Medal (second award), Good Conduct Medal (fifth award), Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. . Because of his military career, he was a member of the Fleet Reserves Association, National Association Uniform Services, Non-Commission Officers Association, and American Military Retirees Association.

Following his military service, he was employed at Barfield's and Diversified Resources as care coordinator. He was a member of High Hill Baptist Church in Turner County. He is the son of the late Lonnie Roscoe Wood and Luna Cloe Metcalf Wood.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Annette Hickox Wood of Waycross; one son, Curtis D. Wood, Jr. of Waycross; one daughter, Kathy Hendrix (Neal) of Waycross; six grandchildren, Kenneth Wood (Jennifer Martinez), Devin Wood (Sabrina Merrier), Lonnie Wood (Sierra), Morris Grant (Hannah), Gunter Hendrix and Griffin Hendrix; five great grandchildren, Allie Martinez, Garrett Hall, Isabellah Nails, Kayden Grant; special cousin, C. C. Farmer (Gladys); and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday (July 23, 2015) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10 until 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed by signing the online registry at www.musicfuneralhome.com.
