Dawn's birth father, Richard Earle Crooker, died when Dawn was 8 years old. Dawn graduated from Wakefield High School, Wakefield, Mass in 1970, and lived most of her life in New England, before moving to Florida 15 years ago to be near her mother and step-dad. While in Florida she was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Sebastion, actively living the practice of being kind, loving, and compassionate to others.

Prior to moving to Florida she worked as a school photographer with Lifetouch National School Studios, a career in which she became involved through her step-father Charles Young. During her work period with Lifetouch she lived in various places in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. After moving to Florida she became owner and operator of the Barefoot Peddler Community Post Office in Sebastion . Her step-dad actively supported her in the operation of the store and post office that comprised the business.

She is best known for her love of people and animals, her caring nature, and a sense of humor. She could always be found with a huge smile on her face, which many characterized as "contagious." Dawn always knew how to make children laugh. She enjoyed playing games of all kinds and making fun-filled memories. Throughout her life Dawn kept an assortment of pets, including birds, cats and dogs. In recent years her little dogs, Charlie, Cubby, Dude, and Mooney, provided her with much joy and laughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to H.A.L.O. Animal Rescue, 710 Jackson Street, Sebastian, FL 32958 or Humane Society of Vero Beach, P.O. Box 644, Vero Beach, FL 32961 in memory of Dawn Hawkins.
Memorial services are being planned in both Florida and Massachusetts. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Hanover Mass., where will she take her final resting place alongside Charles and Phyllis Young.
