Mary Vivian Atkinson was born November 23, 1928 in Pinellas County Florida, the daughter of the late Carl Napier Atkinson, Sr. and Vivian Beck Atkinson; and sister of Carl Napier Atkinson, Jr. She passed away Friday, June 12, 2015 at her home at Givens Highland Farms Retirement Community.
Mary V, as she was known to all her friends and acquaintances, was a graduate of Florida State University and also the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond. She worked for many years as a DCE (Director of Christian Education) for churches all over the state of Florida and in the Southeast. In the early nineties she was named Church Educator of the Year by the Association of Church Educators. In the latter part of her career she worked for the PCUSA both in Atlanta and in Louisville, helping to place ministers within church communities, among other duties.
She was a member of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, where she played in the bell choir for several years and sang in the church choir. She had an enormous love for cats throughout her entire life and loved to “pet-sit” for her friends.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Judy Atkinson; niece, Adrienne Atkinson; and two great-nephews, Carl and Alex, all of St. Petersburg, FL. Also survivors are her numerous “boys and girls,” as she referred to them, whom she shepherded in her many years of service as a DCE.
Her memorial service was at 2:00 PM Friday, June 19, 2015 at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church.
