Charles enlisted in the Marines 10 July 1963, at a Pittsburgh Recruiting Office.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, Charles was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Utah with the ARVN Division that had received intelligence that the 21st NVA Regiment had recently moved into the area northwest of Quang Ngai City and northeast of Chau Ngai (4) and 8 kilometers south southwest of Binh Son. Operation Utah was to be a coordinated attack against the 21st NVA. They came under heavy fire from the NVA that was entrenched on and around Hill 50. This was a 3 day attack. Charles died as a result of gunshot wound to the head from hostile rifle fire. India and Mike Company lost 45 Marines during the intense fighting against the 21st NVA.
