William was born in Lawence County, Pennsylvania. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1854 and they settled at Oxford Mills. In 1864 he enlisted with CO. M 7th. IOWA CAVALRY CIVIL WAR and served 2 years, 2 months and 18 days in the Union army. He came home after the war and in 1867 he moved to Jackson County, Iowa. He purchased a sawmill and ran it successfully, along with a post office. He served as justice of the peace for many years and was a notery public at the time of his death.

He was married to Henrietta P. Daily on 19 January 1869,. in a ceremony performed by F. Swift, J.P. They had 10 children, 3 of whom died in infantcy and Henry, John L., James, George, Mrs. Millie Hamilton, Mrs. Sylvia Burkey & Daisy.

William lived on the same farm for 62 years. He was described as being a friend to the friendless and a great friend of those he loved. He was a member of the G.A.R., first at Emeline, and then at Maquoketa, and was baptised into the Presbyterian church as a baby. He had always been in the best of health and was described as "being young for his age." For many years, up to the week before his death, he walked a mile for his mail.

He died from pneumonia at home where he resided for more than six-tenths of a century. He was 87 years old. At the time of his death he was survived by 7 of his children, 15 grandchildren, and one brother, Hiram Brady, of Olin, Iowa.
