George Patterson, Laurel, Dies After Short Illness

George Patterson, 75, retired farmer, died at 1:00 am Friday at his home near Laurel, following a month's illness. Surviving relatives are the widow; four sons, Elza and Edgar of Rush County and Walter and Jesse of near Laurel; and one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Carpenter of Shelby County.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Sunday at the Laurel M F Church, conducted by the Rev. Marshall Robbins. Burial was made in the Laurel Cemetery.

George was born 5 Aug 1860 in Franklin County, Indiana to George W and Barbara E Harry Patterson.
His first wife was Indiana Brook. They married 1 May 1881 in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana.

George was a hard worker with a strong sense of family. He worked in the logging business and farmed with his sons even after the sons had families of their own. He raised his children mostly by himself. He also raised Elzie's three sons from his first marriage after their mother, Jessie, died in a fire.
Every winter family members would come to spend the winter. George and his boys would cut and haul extra wood just to buy groceries to feed every one. One winter they had 21 extra mouths to feed. Mary was a hard worker and was run ragged in the winter.
George and Mary also took care of his uncle Ike after he went blind.

George died from toxemia caused by gangrene of the right arm on 3 Jan 1936 in Laurel, Franklin County, Indiana.

Gravesite Details

His grandchildren have visited his grave in the past, but when I went there in 2008, I could not find his stone. We could not get to it for years. They are just starting to clear it out again, but many stones are missing, broken, or in a pile.
