Charles Eugene “Gene” Dwyer, age 93 of Troy, formerly of Silex, passed away Monday, July 13, 2015 in Troy.
Gene was born March 25, 1922, in Silex, the son of the late T.A. and Essica Legina (Kimler) Dwyer.
On Nov. 16, 1946, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, he married Helen Mae Meleganics. She preceded him in death.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Gene grew up in Silex and spent his early years on the family farm. He worked in Johnson City, Tenn. prior to enlisting in the US Army. As a radio operator for the Second IndianHead Division, he landed on Normandy Beach two days after ‘D’ Day, and fought in the European Theatre, including the Battle of the Bulge. Gene received numerous citations and honors for his military service. Upon returning from the war, Gene and his brother Quig were the battery of the baseball team, with Gene pitching. For his athletic talents, he was inducted into the St. Charles County Sports Hall of Fame.
He owned his own freight company for approximately 20 years, while maintaining a small farm, and raising seven daughters. He retired from Monsanto as a master scheduler. In retirement, Gene traveled, gardened, played golf and ‘tinkered’ in his shop. When macular degeneration impaired his vision, he focused on the love of his family, grandchildren, and friends. There was always a Cardinals game playing in the background. He was the ultimate Cardinal’s fan. Gene will be fondly remembered by all of the lives he touched during his 93 years. He had the gift of making each person he encountered feel like the most important person in the world. Even in his last days, Dad was still ever polite and always kind.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 16 at the Millwood Kof C Hall with funeral services at 10 a.m., Friday, July 17 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Millwood with Fr. Charles Tichacek officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery with military honors being conducted by VFW Post #5553 and Missouri Funeral Honors out of Jefferson Barracks. Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Silex is in charge of arrangements.
