Robert was trained in the McKillip Veterinary College in Chicago, Illinois and practiced all his life in Lake Crystal, Blue Earth Co., MN. (He did go back to Mankato for a year abt 1904, to run his father's vet business when his father went back to Scotland for a year).

Robert, wife Jennie and their son played as a small trio for weddings, parties and lodges all over southern Minnesota, during the tough years of the depression.
He thereby gained many new clients and his practice expanded nicely.
Robert Porter played the guitar and banjo, their son-the clarinet, sax and drums, and Jennie the piano.

Robert Porter was a collector of Native American arrowheads. His farm clients, upon learning this, saved all they found while plowing. When he died, Jennie gave the whole collection to the Blue Earth Historical Society in Mankato. (When his cousin Kenneth Simpson investigated in 1984- they had all disappeared without a mention or a trace).
