Second son of home builder James E. Wood and London-born Mary Slatter Wood. He began his career as a stockbroker for Borton & Borton in Cleveland, Ohio, and then formed his own firm, Wood, Gillis & Co, in 1933. He was a board member of the Cleveland Stock Exchange from 1933-1939. During WWII, "Wally" worked for the Cleveland Graphite & Bronze Co but was on loan to the US War Production Authority. In 1956, he and his family moved to Greensburg, Indiana, to head up the plant of the Bohn Aluminum & Brass Corp there. He was plant manager until his sudden death from a heart attack in 1957.
