Andrew enlisted in the 14th Kentucky Infantry (Union Army) and followed his unit to Catlettsburg, Kentucky where they made camp. Measles broke out and spread through the company, killing several soldiers including Andrew. He is buried in a mass grave which was opened after the war. The remains of the soldiers were examined, with only two individuals' identities being confirmed and removed.
