The son of David Rhodes, in 1860, he was a farmer living with his father and siblings in Freedom Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 8 as a private with Co. C, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and deserted November 26, one day before his brother Abraham.
He married Sarah J. Forthman and fathered Emma V. (b. 12/??/66 - married Charles Montgomery Rhodes [sic]), William H. (b.@1871), Franklin J. (b. @1874), Ida Catherine (b. 01/17/78 - married a Dellinger), Harry (b. @1880, d. 06/09/80), and Mary Susan (b. 08/29/82 - married a Dellinger).
