NORTH CLARENDON - Edward G. Congdon Sr., born Sept. 25, 1922, in Clarendon, son of Hugh and Julia (Johnson) Congdon, passed away at his home, on May 23, 2012 following a brief illness. Mr. Congdon was surrounded by all of his loving family when he peacefully passed.

Ed's early life included having his first milking cows during his teen years. He was educated in the Clarendon Flats School and graduated from Rutland High School in 1939. He also graduated SUNY Morrisville with an agricultural degree in 1941. He then spent a few years as a milk tester in New York State and Connecticut.

Ed married the love of his life, Dorothy Sharp, in 1946. Ed and Dorothy will have been married for 66 years this November. Ed and Dorothy spent their years raising three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Ed enjoyed farming on the family farm, which included sugaring during the spring time. He enjoyed driving the tractor with a grandkid on each knee. He also enjoyed hunting trips with his sons and friends to Newfoundland, Labrador, and Wyoming. Ed devoted most of his life to the Rutland County Agricultural Society (Vermont State Fair), where he served as Cattle Superintendent, President, and General Manager. Ed often reminisced of the many country music stars he met while at the fair, as well as the many friends he gained while in the business. Ed will truly be remembered as "Mr. Rutland Fair."

Ed was a member of The Old Brick Congregational Church of Clarendon. He played in many softball leagues and tournaments until he was in his sixties and he also served the Town of Clarendon as Moderator and Auditor.

Ed was predeceased last year by his brother Leland Congdon Sr.; sisters Helen Durfee, and Ella Purple; and an infant brother Hugh Congdon Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Sharp) Congdon; daughter Susan Wilbur (Richard); sons Edward Jr. (Margie) and Robert Sr. (Nancy); grandchildren: Edward III, Jonathan Wilbur, Lindsey, Robert Jr., Alyssa Williams (Christopher), Chelsea and Colleen; one great-grandchild, Ashlyn Williams; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Brick Church, 298 Middle Road, P.O. Box 75, North Clarendon, VT 05759, c/o Treasurer, Lynda Bushman; or the Rutland Area Christian School, 112 Lincoln Avenue, Rutland, VT 05701; or to a charity of one's choice.

The celebration of life service will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 1 p.m. in The Brick Church, with the Rev. William Kingsley, Jr., pastor, officiating.

Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
