Louis Magrath King, Consul and author of several works on China and Tibet. Son of Margaret 'Veronica' (nee Williamson) and Paul Henry King, Commissioner of Chinese Customs Service. Born at Jiujiang, China and educated at Chefoo School (Yantai) and Berkhamsted. King joined the British China Consular Service in 1905, and served as a Captain in the Chinese Labour Corps during the final year of WW1. King was stationed at Kangding (Tachienlu), Sichuan, from 1913-1915 and 1919-1922, where he met Rinchen Lhamo, author of 'We Tibetans' (Seeley Service & Co., 1926). King and Lhamo were officially married at Chengdu in 1923. King left the China Consular Service in 1924, and subsequently settled in England in 1925.

The inscription on the headstone reads: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF RIN-CHEN LHA-MO. WIFE OF LOUIS MAGRATH KING. DIED 13TH NOVEMBER 1929. AGED 28 YEARS. AND LOUIS MAGRATH KING. BORN 16TH DECEMBER 1886 DIED 16TH DECEMBER 1949. AGED 63 YEARS.

Louis King authored the following works: 'China As It Really Is' [By A Resident In Peking] (Eveleigh Nash, 1912); 'China in Turmoil: Studies in Personality' (Heath Cranton, 1927); and, 'By Tophet Flare' (Methuen, 1937), published in the USA as 'The Warden of the Marches: A Tale of Adventure on the Chinese Frontier of Tibet' (Houghton Mifflin, 1938), a semi-autobiographical novel based on his experiences at Tachienlu.
