Boyd Hoopes Sims, 48, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 14, 1999 at home surrounded by his Eternal Sweetheart and loving family following a courageous five-month battle with metastatic colon cancer.

He was born September 12, 1950 in Salt Lake City, a son of Elmer and LaRue Hoopes Sims. He married Susan Gordon of Orem, Utah on June 5, 1970 in the Manti LDS Temple. Graduated from Provo High School and LDS Seminary and attended Weber State College. Received a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University in Social Work and Law Enforcement and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Utah. Worked for the Idaho State Department of Social Services for six years and the Utah Department of Human Services for 19 years. Boyd also worked part-time for Holy Cross Hospital/Salt Lake Regional Medical Center for 17 years. Currently serving as Vice President of the Utah Soccer Referee Association and as a referee for High School, Youth and Adult soccer leagues. Boyd will be long remembered for his great love of soccer where he served as coach, referee, referee mentor and coordinator for the Utah Summer Games. He was a devoted husband and father, a loving son, a caring brother and uncle, and a loyal friend.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 28 years, children: Elder Brian B. Sims (23) currently serving in the Salt Lake City South Mission, Scott G. Sims (21), Melissa Sims (17), and Amanda Sims (15) all of West Jordan; mother, LaRue H. Sims of Provo, father and mother-in-law, LeLan and Marie Gordon of Orem, one brother and four sisters: Kathleen (Bruce) Flygare of Orem, Rolayne (Barry) Edwards of Highland, Lynnette (Warren) Child of Salt Lake, Marvin H. (DeAnn) Sims of Salt Lake, and JaVan Sims of Provo; brother-in law, Terry (Paula) Farrer of Provo. Preceeded in death by his father, sister, Marjean Sims Farrer and brother, Joel H. Sims.

Boyd loved camping and fishing (especially at Moon Lake), BYU football, and spending time with his family. He was an active member of the LDS Church where he served as Young Men's President, Scoutmaster, Sunday School President, Ward Membership Clerk and Ward Program Specialist. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his generosity to all and the way he related to those around him. His caring encouragement to the youth as well as his Christ-like love for everyone is something that has always distinguished him.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 18, 1999, 12 noon at the River Oaks Stake Center, 8950 South 1300 West, where friends may pay their respects Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens.
