Joel was an artist who specialized in portraiture. He went to the Hawaiian Islands several times, starting in 1847. He opened a studio, to which he invited the public to come to see his work and commission him to do portraits of themselves and family members.
He also worked as a bookkeeper and miner. He was the mayor of Monterey, California in 1852.
He lived for a short time in Hawaii in 1847 and the early 1850s, but spent much of his life in California.
