Robert's parents are Thomas Rivers and Elizabeth Edmunds Jones. His known siblings are Edmund, Margaret, Rebecca Jane, William, Elizabeth Edmunds, Martha, Thomas Jones and John F Rivers.

He first married Amanda Malverna Cheatham, October 29, 1831 in Springfield, Robertson County, Tennessee. Their known children are Fannie Cheatham, George and Amanda Elizabeth Rivers.

He second married Susan Elizabeth Cheatham, ca 1838 in Tennessee (cousin ?? of Amanda). Their known children are Jane (Jennie), Robert Richard, Thomas Hunt, Mildred Minna and Susan Louise Rivers.

He was a criminal defense lawyer who rode the circuit horseback. He died in the Ake Hotel while doing a trial there, and the circumstances of those days would not allow his body to be moved to his home in Columbus, Colorado County, Texas. There is a marker in the Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas, Masonic Cemetery to recognize family members buried elsewhere.

The bar association erected a monument to his memory at the Williamson County Courthouse.

Often called Jones Rivers, he was the great grandfather of Admiral Richard E Byrd, the explorer.
