He was a criminal defense lawyer who rode the circuit horseback. He died in the Ake Hotel while doing a trial there, and the circumstances of those days would not allow his body to be moved to his home in Columbus, Colorado County, Texas. There is a marker in the Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas, Masonic Cemetery to recognize family members buried elsewhere.
The bar association erected a monument to his memory at the Williamson County Courthouse.
