Elbert Morris Brines was a 20th century mechanic and a painter in Iowa and Northern California. Bert as he was called, was born 26 January 1888 in Brule, Perkins County, Nebraska to Thomas L. Brines 1859-1944 and his wife Christina Marie Blomstrom 1864-1926. Described as tall 5'11" 160 lbs with a medium build brown hair and eyes, the furthest education he received was 7th grade. In 1914 he worked as a telephone lineman for Iowa Telephone Company in Mason City, Iowa.

In 1917 he was an auto mechanic in Sioux City, Iowa. For a brief time he was a manager of a garage in Rushmore, Nobles County, Minnesota in the 1920's before moving out west to Sacramento, California during the Great Depression. Bert became a mechanic then later a foreman for an oil company in Sacramento during the 1930's. By 1940 he was working as a general repair man in Sacramento living with his cousin (his dad's sister's son) who was a painter. He reportedly worked every week that year, 10 hours a week with no other income and made $900 total.

Politically in 1932 he registered to vote as a Democrat, his wife did too. She was a Presbyterian, so he did too. During WWII he became an employee of McClellan Air Field in Sacramento until he retired. He died 3 Apr 1967 in Sacramento and is buried there at Sierra Hills Memorial Park.
